Regents Professor Jim Morrow Maximizes Faculty Development Leave

Successful faculty development leaves don't just happen by accident.  Just ask Dr. Jim Morrow, Regents Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation, who completed his semester-long leave in the fall of 2011.  Morrow, an expert in physical fitness, activity and health outcomes, leveraged his international reputation to develop and strengthen research collaborations across three different continents in four months.Jim Morrow

During his leave, Morrow attended the National Academy of Kinesiology meeting, the Centers for Disease Control's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity; the National Cancer Institute; Stanford University's Center on Longevity; Arizona State University, and the Annual Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance meeting in Dallas. While in Europe, Morrow presented his research on youth physical fitness at the Munich University of Technology, Cardiology and Pediatrics and the annual meeting of the German Society of Pediatric Cardiology in Weimar, Germany. To conclude his leave across the globe, Morrow visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong serving as the chair of external review committee for the department of sports science and physical education where he evaluated program effectiveness. 

Morrow, a 19-year faculty member at UNT, took his first UNT leave in 2003 working at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia and serving as a visiting scientist at the renowned Cooper Institute in Dallas, TX. Beyond the personal benefit of academic stimulation and rejuvenation, faculty development leaves bring recognition and distinction to the University. "As we strive to become a top tier research institution, the visibility that a faculty member can bring to the university through strong research collaborations is paramount" says Morrow.
